Our Digipack Analysis

Image

Our images mainly contain the artist, grass and a pinecone on the back cover. These images convey that our artist is not materialistic and is more associated with nature.

The pink colour scheme is dominant in our digipack images as this conveys the general pop princess style. Pink is generally seen as a feminine colour and is used by many Female pop artists in the industry today. This is what we have tried to replicate.

We have not made any use of sightlines in our image as our artist is turned away from the camera, this conveys a sense of mystery and perhaps states that she is shy and innocent.

The dress code is not over the top , we went for a more casual look in order to relate to a normal teenage girl audience.

Layout

The front cover image is positioned with the artist at the side, however she still stands out on the cover as we are immediately drawn to her.
The back cover is a close up of a pinecone in front of a tree, it is right in the centre.

The audience will immediately be drawn to the artist who is coloured in pink and stands out from the rest of the image. They will also be drawn to the fact she is looking away from the camera.

We have deliberately framed the front image to include the grass and the upper part of her body. We wanted to include the grass as it is a central theme to the whole digipack.
We have positioned the logos on the back cover as that it is a general convention of music albums. We included our group logo to show that which label the artist is associated with. We have also added a link for Lexia's website and Twitter page. This allows fans to find out more and get updates on the artist.

Adjustment

We have cropped the artist's legs out of the image.
We have added a pink colour effect to the images to show clearly which genre this album is and to attract the female audience who see pink as being associated with Pop Princesses.
The lighting on the back cover emphasises the tree and pinecone but also gives it a "heavenly" look with the white light. This relates to the album name.

Text
The artist's name is Lexia Parker. We chose this name as we felt that it was an unique name for a Pop Princess. Most pop artist's names are unique like "Britney" and "Selena". This is what we have tried to replicate to stick with the genre.

The songs are typical track names that are associated with the Pop Princess genre. The album name is Heaven and track 3 is Bella Heaven which is normal for albums to be of a similar name to a song. For example Miley Cyrus' album "Breakout" and the first song is called "Breakout".
The songs convey a typical Pop Princess theme with tracks like "Too Young", "Dreams" and "Another Day". These songs contain a story within them which is generally what Pop Princesses sing about.

We chose the font "Airplanes in the night sky" as we felt it was suitable for the artist image with the swirly writing. The size of the text varies with the artist's name a larger size to emphasises who the artist is as she is the main focus.

Overall image
The back and inlays relate as there is a pink grass naturalistic theme that is central to the whole album.
The themes and subjects of nature , fairytale and heaven are explored in the images and text. The pictures of the grass, trees and pinecone show the nature side. The pink fill and the swirly text bring out the fairytale side whilst the white light and gold font show a sense of heaven and religion.

We have stuck to the conventions of the swirly handwriting and pink theme. However we have challenged many of the Pop Princess conventions like not having the artist face the cover and her sightline looking right at the audience. We have also challenged a materialistic theme and gone for a more innocent nature theme but have also stuck to a fairyland , out of this world theme.

Digipack Images

We have decided as group to go with a natural, flowery image for our pop princess but to be careful not to go down the Country style , we will edit our images to make them look more like a Pop Princess theme.

Filming Progress

Our filming for our Music Video clip has started but so far we have only managed to get 3 shots done last week due to raining and a busy schedule which meant we were not able to film together. Therefore tomorrow we have organised a time where we will come together as a group and film the remaining shots needed so we can get to editing straight away.

Pop Princess Conventions

Pop Princesses are generally blonde in order to convey a sense of innocence in their image but sometimes can have other hair colors. A princess look mainly is idealised on a Cinderella style look with the blonde hair, blue eyes and red lips.

Pop Princesses are typically fashionable , they wear the latest designs and wear a lot of make up to create this image of beauty around them.

Pop Princesses are generally associated with magic and fairies , this appeals to the younger audience who look up to them and idolise them.

It is also common for a Pop Princess' music to mainly be about love and finding their "Prince Charming" . School and their lifestyle are also common themes in this genre.

Digipack Conventions

On the album cover, the artist is generally the centre of attention. This puts them right in the middle and the text normally to the side.

The background of the cover is normally white or a bright colour to show that they are vibrant and exciting. It also makes them stand out on the shelves and when it clearly shows the audience what they are trying to portray with the positive colours.

The text and font on the cover are normally quite swirly and "handwritten". This gives a personal touch to the album making the artist seem more real.

Dyer's Star Theory

I have create a online presentation using Prezi to outline Richard Dyer's "Star Theory" and analysed how a star is constructed.

Filming Locations

Whilst planning for our music video, we have  to consider the locations we are going to film it in. We could choose to go for a rural setting or an urban setting etc. This always depends on the genre though since each genre has its image that it is trying to portray.

Our plan for filming the shots for "Where is the Love?" is to do it around school since there are many signs and buildings which work with the locations in the real video. This clip will be good practice for when we shoot our real video next year as we too will have to plan carefully the different shots and filming locations.

Our Digipack : Pop Princess

We have to decide what our cover and back for our digipack will look like. This involves the picture, text, layout and the positioning.

Font : Airplanes in the night sky - we looked at many different fonts on dafont.com and decided that this is the best one for our digipack.

Album Name : Heaven - We chose this to be the album name as we felt that it was suitable to the genre. Based on our research we found out that it was common for album names in this genre to be one word and tell a story to the audience.

Artist Name : Lexia Parker - We chose this name as we felt that it was a common name for our artist in this genre. Many artists create a name for themselves and their image but Pop Princesses generally use their real names in order to make themselves more personal and true to life.

Tracklist :

1. Another day
2. Ticking of a Clock
3. Bella Heaven
4. Too Young

Digipack - Pop Princess

As part of our course, our group has to create a digipack from a specific genre. The genre we got given randomly was POP PRINCESS.

This proves to a bit of a challenge since there is only 3 guys in our group and Pop Princess is not the genre we typically listen to. But it actually is quite a good simple genre to do as there are many artists that fit this category in the music category today. I will be doing research into these artists and the image of being a Pop Princess.

Editing for Where Is The Love?

When editing the clips we have filmed for our "Where is the love?" opening we have to consider 3 important factors:
- the cutting rate
- length of takes
- lip synching

Cutting Rate
The music and the cuts in the video match so we have to make sure that we also do this. The cutting rate is very quick in the first 20 seconds so we have to make sure that we get the shots matched up and in the correct order corresponding to the actual video.

Length of Takes
Most of the shots in the first 20 seconds of the video are 1 to 3 seconds long so we also have to match the exact length in order for our video to be as accurate. We will also make sure to do several takes of each shot so there is no room for error.

Lip synching

There is no singing in the first 20 seconds so we will not have to cover this.

Camera techniques for Where Is The Love?

When filming this extract from Where is the love we have to copy and match the camera shots from the video.

- Zoom out 00:08-00:11
- Handheld 00:11-00:12

Mise - En - Scene for Where Is The Love?

Props
- Question mark posters and stickers - black, white

To do this we have already found the question mark image on the internet:

Costume
- Black tracksuits
- Black hoodies
- Black hat
- Black sunglasses

Characters

There are about 6 different characters in the opening 20 seconds with each character only appearing for a few seconds. Their identities are not clear either so the main focus is not entirely on the character but rather the action of them sticking up the posters/stickers.

Music Video Sample

To prove as a group that we are able to produce a full music video next year, each group in our class has to copy and film the first 20 seconds of a music video off a select list. The music video we chose as a group was : Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love.

We felt as a group that this was a good choice as we have analysed it already and some of the other music videos we had to choose from were quite complicated.
